Description

Hosts that make you feel at home, environment that replenishes your energies, views that are vistas of awesomeness and an interior that bespeaks of the old-world charm are definitely the hallmarks of this three bedroom cottage in Bhimtal. This is a British era cottage, constructed in the 1900s, earlier surrounded by tea gardens and now by cider, oak and pine trees. At this charming cottage in Bhimtal, the ambience will make you rejoice in the natural beauty, the aromas will fill your senses and the sense of being in a world of your own will completely take over your soul.

This cottage near Nainital is owned by Padmini and her retinue of six children. They are eager, enthusiastic and energetically involved in welcoming you and making sure that you enjoy every aspect of your holiday. All the three rooms are clean, comfortable and cozy. Two rooms have annexe to house two adults and kids while one room has a sitting area which can be converted into a sleeping area for one adult. All the rooms open into the garden and offer panoramic views of the property and the forests beyond.

The greatest delight of this cottage in Bhimtal is the fresh pancakes with home mulberry preserve in the morning, to home-made buns in the evening, to Indian and continental dishes in the afternoon and a barbeque at night. Each gastronomical delight will enthrall you. Ah! You are thinking of the weight, don’t you worry; the treks to Sat Tal, the hunger pangs after a cold swim in the waters and the delight of walking through tea gardens along with the fresh mountain air will make you slurp on and digest every morsel.

Yes, Padmini, her kids and her staff will feed you well but they will also go out of their way to ensure your holiday at this Bhimtal cottage is incomparable to any other. Stories of the colorful life of the ancestral owners, suggesting day tours, sending guides to help your navigate to the nearby villages are just some outdoor activities. While here, be sure to visit the butterfly museum and a meal with village folks. Or else, forget the world, sit down on the outside dining, and use the peace and the sounds of birds and the winds to rejuvenate your soul or create an art masterpiece.

How to Reach

Rail : The nearest railhead is Kathgodam which is approximately 21 kilometers from Bhimtal.

We would suggest getting off the train at Haldwani which is approximately 8 kilometers short of Kathgodam as trains take almost 45 minutes to travel the short distance from Haldwani to Kathgodam.
From either railway station taxi's are available to bring you to The Retreat. If you give us suitable notice we can arrange for you to be picked up from either Haldwani or Kathgodam in a private taxi.
The trains that come from Delhi to Kathgodam are given below. Please do check the current train timings, etc. for any changes in timings, days of running, etc.

Kathgodam Shatabdi  Anand Vihar Terminal 06:15  11:50 All days except Thursday

Utr. Sampark Kranti Express Delhi 16:00  22:40 All Days

Ranikhet Express Delhi 21:10 05:05 All Days

Road : Buses run regularly from the Anand Vihar ISBT to Haldwani. Uttaranchal Roadways run Volvo (twice a day) / AC / Ordinary buses throughout the day to Haldwani.
Once you reach Haldwani you can take a taxi to Bhimtal.

From Delhi By Road - If coming by car or taxi
The road from Delhi to Bhimtal is excellent with the driving time being 6 - 8 hours depending upon traffic and the weather. You need to take NH 24 upto Rampur where you turn left onto NH 87 which takes you past Kathgodam till the turn off for Bhimtal
The route from Nizammuddin Bridge in Delhi to Kathgodam will be Nizamuddin Bridge (NH-24) - Ghaziabad (NH-24) - Hapur Bypass (NH-24) - Gajraula (NH-24) - Moradabad Bypass (NH-24) - Rampur (NH-87) - Bilaspur (NH-87) - Rudrapur (NH-87) - Haldwani (NH-87) - Kathgodam. Kathgodam to Bhimtal
About 4 kilometers after passing Kathgodam railway station heading towards Nainital there comes a fork in the road. Take the Right Hand side road which will bring you to Bhimtal.
Once you enter Bhimtal drive along the lake, which will be on your right, till almost the very end where you will see a U-turn (you can follow the signs showing the way to The Mountain Club Resort").
Take the U-turn and start the climb. The road is rather rough so do drive very carefully for about 2 kilometers. You can follow the signs for Mountain Club Resort. After 2 kilometers you will come to a set of large gate posts saying Fredy's Place. Drive through the gateposts and follow the signs saying "The Retreat" till you come to the old cheese factory where the road comes to an end. Come up the stairs on the left and you have arrived at "The Retreat".

About Location

Activities There are lots of things that a holiday maker can do when on holiday at The Retreat.
You can enjoy nature walks through our Lakeland Estate, formerly a British Tea Plantation. Beautiful agrarian scenes of rice terraces, wheat fields, and small villages with the smell of cooking dinner and the happy shouts of playing children greet your senses. Wildlife abounds amidst the luscious green pine and oak hillsides and throughout the valleys of the estate.
Take a walk to Panna Tal which is a 30 to 40 minute walk away. Once there enjoy  a picnic lunch (barbecue optional) on the lake shore and take a swim if in the mood. Walk, or drive back in a hired taxi, stopping along the way at Nal Damyanti Tal to feed the sacred Mahseer fish and to visit the temple with its ancient ashtadhatu idol which was excavated from the lake bed. Also have a look at the 100 year old water driven flour mill.
Hike through the forested hills of the Estate to the cliffs of nearby Surya Gaon. There is a possibility of spotting Ghoral, Serow, Sambhar, Muntjac (Barking Deer) and numerous bird species while on the walk.
A full day hike to the top of Karkotak Hill which has a view of Nanda Devi. Picnic on the peak and come back to a cosy tea.
Pick tea from Orange Pekoe tea bushes, planted by the British in the 1850s, from our Estate Forests. The tea bushes flourish in oak forests that have been allowed to grow around them.
Visit a village on the Estate with a village guide (and a family member, if desired) and have a pahari meal in a village home if you like.
Birdwatchers will enjoy a stay here as the entire area, being well-forested, has numerous bird species right at The Retreat as well as on all the walks around.
You can visit the renowned butterfly and moth museum which is just a stone's throw away from The Retreat or visit the Observatory at Hanumangarhi near Nainital
In the evenings sit around a campfire and have a barbecue to wind down the day.
If you are a keen angler, fishing permits can be arranged to allow you to indulge in your pastime.
The weather permitting you could also go parasailing nearby.
Nearby trips include Nainital or the sloping orchards of Ramgarh and Ranikhet, where one can see the beautiful icy peaks of Badrinath, Trisul and Nanda Devi (7770m).
Uttarakhand is also referred to as “Dev Bhoomi” which means the Land of the Gods. If spiritually inclined you can visit Chota Kailash, Mukteshwar Dham, and Naina Devi Temple. Day trips can be arranged to:NainitalKilbury (horse riding to Kilbury from Nainital)AlmoraRanikhetMukteshwarHairakhanChota KailashCorbett National Park
We also offer cooking classes to those who may be interested. If none of the above appeal to you then just relax at The Retreat and recharge your batteries on fresh air, great food and an absolute relaxed atmosphere.

Testimonial

A warm and cosy home up the hill at the Estate in Bhimtal, where you can forget about everything and everyone else and just be with yourself and your dear ones. Paddy and her children are the perfect host and we strongly recommend that you experience this home away from home. Its an old colonial bungalow that has been restored yet keeps its charm. The family is extremely thoughtful and caring and make your stay very comfortable and memorable by personally looking after all details during your stay. The food is excellent, their hospitality warm and for all who look for a quiet escape away from the hustle bustle of the city and are not looking for a luxurious, commercial hill resort The Retreat is truly recommended.Singhs - Gurgaon

Isn't it wonderful that you come to a new place not knowing what to expect and you see a lady welcoming you with a smile and hug .. Three boys come along and take your bags , two dogs who are happy to see you .... And then you enter the most cozy little home . That's Padmini and her sons and daughters and her dogs who take care of you with their wonderful hospitality . Travelling with two kids ( 6 & 2) for a mother is never a vacation . But living with the Smetaceks changed that . We had the most wonderful times ,the scenic treks the beautiful canopy of green , the yummy mulberry preserves the food was made to order especially for my kids ( Mickey Mouse shaped pancakes ) picnic baskets ... The works. The hospitality is amazing ,the food is deliciously fresh. True lovers of nature must visit this place and enjoy the richness of culture , richness of history and richness of hospitality. Home is where the heart is and that's what Padmini has made in The Retreat and It made me leave a piece of my heart there . Thank you Padmini and kids. Shewhta

A very comfortable stay indeed. The view of the Saat taal lake from the forest behind The Retreat was absolutely breathtaking!! Padmini & her beautiful children made our stay the most pleasurable and relaxing one, my family and I have found very dear and precious friends in them. The delicious home made food, delicious fruit preserves (Mulberry topped them all!), cakes, Barbeques and bonfires were such a treat! Getting the time and ideal atmosphere to paint was definitely the icing on the cake! I'd Love to go back to Bhimtal again and again..Just the perfect place to unwind, relax, take long walks, trek, swim, paint, read...or just spend the evening chatting to Paddy sipping some of her delicious coffee & home made Yummmy muffins!Saba Bhopal
