A large, stately rental cottage in Solan, a hill town near the famous hill station Shimla, is the perfect getaway during the summer months, or for an extended weekend away from your hectic schedule. Surrounded by Deodar and Pine trees, the quietude and peace of the large house, lawn and warm interiors will belie the fact that it is just a little away from the national highway. Surrounded by pine and deodar trees, this ancestral cottage is the holiday spot for a family looking for a holiday in the hills, but not secluded from the fun of a city life.

The host family has opened the rental cottage near Shimla, which has two bedrooms with attached bathrooms and feature king-size beds. There are large living spaces in the house along with a spacious lawn. All these open area will give you ample space to relax in, enjoy a cuppa of the hills, or get pleasant goose bumps going with the fresh nip in the air. Sit out in the lawn in the early mornings to enjoy the chirp of the birds, or to sun yourself with the dying sun in the evening.  

The Solan cottage offers breakfast, both Indian and Continental, for you to choose from. Please keep in mind that this is a home stay and fresh, home-cooked platters [thalis] are available on prior order and at a nominal extra cost. If you are not interested in home food, there is a Domino’s just around the corner and a full market to meet all your culinary needs. Don’t forget to visit the Solan Brewery, Kuthar Fort, Majathai Sanctuary, Nalagarh Palace or go to any of famous nearby hill stations Kasauli, Chail or Shimla.

How to Reach

Air : The nearest Domestic Airport is Shimla Airport, roughly one hour drive from Solan. Daily flights from Delhi to Chandigarh are available. The second nearest Airport is Chandigarh Airport, roughly one and half hours drive from Solan. It is well connected to the major cities like Amritsar, New Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Goa, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Leh.

Rail : The town has its own Railway Station named as Solan Railway Station. It is well connected to the other important cities of India via Kalka Shimla Express, Himalyan Queen and Shimla Kalka Passenger etc.

Road : The town of Solan is approximately 7 hours away from Delhi. One can drive or hire a car. Here are a few routes you could contemplate on picking one from. NH1 and NH 22- 313.2 km – 6 hours or else take NH 1- 370 km – 7 hours

About Location

Solan is the district headquarters of Solan district (created on 1st September 1972) in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The largest Municipal Council of Himachal Pradesh, it is located 46 kilometres (29 mi) south of the state capital, Shimla. At an average elevation of 1,600 metres (5,200 ft). 
The place is named after the Hindu goddess Shoolini Devi. Every year in the month of June, a fair celebrating the goddess is held, featuring a 3-day mela at the central Thodo grounds. Solan was the capital of the erstwhile princely state, Bhagat.
It is known as the "Mushroom city of India" because of the vast mushroom farming in the area as well as the Directorate of Mushroom Research (DMR) situated at Chambaghat.For the information of the readers the first research project on growing of edible mushrooms in India was sanctioned by the Agriculture Department, Govt of HP around 1959. This was entrusted to Shri S.S.Jain ( Late Shri Sukhbir Singh Jain) the first Mycologist and Plant Pathologist of the HP state. He came down from Shimla to Solan in 1959 and established the Mycology and Plant Pathology Laboratory single handedly. With just one peon he started his experiments and was successful in growing the first button mushroom in India. Later as Officer on Special Duty he established the HP Agriculture University in a building on a hill close to the Solan Railway Station.
Solan is crowned as the "City of Red Gold", in reference to the bulk production of tomatoes in the area. The town is situated between Chandigarh (joint capital of Punjab and Harayana) and Shimla (state capital), on the Kalka-Shimla National Highway-22. 
The Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge heritage railway line, built by the British passes through Solan and is a recognised World Heritage site.
